Balestier Khalsa face must-win test against Lion City Sailors

Kodai Tanaka against Geylang International in the Singapore Cup 2024/25 Group Stage.

Balestier Khalsa will face a serious challenge in the Singapore Cup as they take on the Lion City Sailors in a decisive Group B clash. With both teams level on points, this match is crucial in the battle for a top-two finish and progression to the knockout stage. The stakes are high, and for Balestier, a win would put them in a strong position to advance.

Balestier’s tournament started with a dramatic 5-4 victory over Geylang International, in which forward Kodai Tanaka was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick. The Japanese forward’s clinical finishing has been central to Balestier’s offensive play, and he has now netted three goals in the tournament, only two goals behind the Cup’s top scorer, Geylang’s Tomoyuki Doi.

“We're not doing anything special, just challenging ourselves to play our attacking football no matter who the opponent is,” Tanaka said. His goals have been vital, but he is quick to emphasise the team effort. “My teammates have been helping me a lot, it's not just about me but about the team.”

On the other side, the Sailors have built their campaign on defensive solidarity, and are coming into this game on the back of a sensational 1-1 draw with J.League side Sanfreece Hiroshima on 12 March to seal their spot in the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League Two.

Tanaka is well aware of the challenge ahead. “I have the utmost respect for them. Their defense is the best in the league, but I also know their weaknesses,” said Tanaka who spent a single season at Mattar Road in 2023. His familiarity with the club could give Balestier an edge as they look for ways to penetrate their disciplined backline.

In another key fixture today, BG Tampines Rovers will go head-to-head with the Young Lions as the competition heats up.
