SINGAPORE, 30 MAY 2025 – The final act of the 2024/25 season sees Singapore’s top two sides lock horns one last time with silverware, supremacy, and legacy all on the line.
On Saturday, 31 May, BG Tampines Rovers and Lion City Sailors will battle for Singapore Cup glory at Jalan Besar Stadium, in a blockbuster finale that promises fireworks.
The Stags and the Sailors have been near-unstoppable this campaign. Their final league encounter ended in a gripping 0-0 draw, with Zharfan Rohaizad’s heroic late save denying Joel Chew and preserving parity. It was a fitting preview of just how little separates these two juggernauts, despite the eight-point difference in the league table.
For BG Tampines Rovers, it is a shot at a fifth Singapore Cup title and their first since 2019. After a commanding group stage campaign, the Stags edged past Thai powerhouse BG Pathum United in a dramatic 4–3 aggregate win, with Seia Kunori delivering the decisive blow deep into extra time.
The Japanese forward has been a revelation, with two goals and two assists in six Cup appearances.
“Seia, he has created many magical moments for us to enjoy and today is just another,” said Stags’ Head Coach Gavin Lee after Tampines’ 3-2 second-leg semi-final win over Thai side BG Pathum United.
But Lee was quick to keep his side grounded despite the result. “Big kudos to the players, but I think we recognise that it’s only game six. We’ve still got game seven to play,” he said of the final showdown against the Sailors.
Buoyed by their big-game experience and attacking flair, Lee’s men will be eager to end the season with a statement win.
On the other side of the pitch are the Lion City Sailors, SPL champions and ACL2 runners-up, a side eyeing a clean sweep of all domestic titles – and bragging rights that come alongside local domination. After cruising through the group stage, they outclassed a resurgent Brunei DPMM side 5–2 on aggregate in the semifinals.
At the heart of the Sailors’ Cup run is Bart Ramselaar, whose five goals and one assist in five games highlight his class and importance to this Sailors side.
“We are very happy to have progressed to the final. It’s the final. It’s one match. We’re defending our trophy, so we’re going to go all for it,” said Sailors’ Head Coach Aleksandar Ranković, who remained focused on the task ahead.
“Our games against BG Tampines have been fiercely contested this season, and I expect nothing less in the final. We’re hungry to bring home another piece of silverware, and I hope our fans will pack the stadium to push us over the line.”
For the two teams, this Cup final is set to be more than just a season finale. It is a celebration of a campaign defined by a bristling rivalry that has pushed two teams forward, by stunning goals that have pulled fans off their seats, and manic moments that will find their way into quiz questions. It is a showdown between the two best teams in the country, both chasing one final shot at Singapore Cup glory.
