Singapore Cup 2024/25 • 1st March 2025
Robert Eziakor in a match.
It has only been five games into his tenure as Hougang’s interim head coach, but Robert Eziakor is already making the football fraternity sit up and pay closer attention. The Cheetahs fell 2-1 to Brunei DPMM in the Singapore Premier League three days ago, but they have shown a sensational resilience under Eziakor’s leadership, going four matches unbeaten before a red card turned the tide in that DPMM defeat.
“The red card did us no favours, but we must learn to be calm in order to see things clearly,” said Eziakor, in a measured response that has come to be a feature of his tenure. He has been part of Hougang’s biggest moments, including their first major silverware in the Singapore Cup triumph of 2022 and another final appearance in 2023 - both as part of the Cheetahs’ coaching setup That deep connection fuels his approach as he balances league commitments with this year’s Cup challenge.
“This is where we will utilise all the resources we have,” he said. “The Cup is an important competition, and we must approach it with the right mindset.”
Hougang are currently third in Group A of the Singapore Cup, but a win against Young Lions could put them in contention for a top-two finish and a place in the knockout rounds. It’s a familiar opponent—one they battled to a wild 3-3 draw in the league just over a week ago.
“We understand them better now,” said Eziakor, with the demeanour of a man not taking anything for granted. “We will be more organised and articulate in our approach.”
“There’s no difference between both sides based on our last three encounters,” he added, with a glint in his eye that belies a determination to get the job done this time around.
Cup competition brings a different kind of pressure, especially in the knockout stages, but Eziakor is embracing the challenge. He understands that success in this tournament isn’t just about talent—it’s about mentality - and trusting the process.
Hougang and Young Lions played out a thrilling 3-3 draw just a week ago.
“There are always going to be chances since it’s a two-legged knockout, but first, we focus on qualifying,” he emphasised.
For Eziakor, this is more than just another competition. It’s another chapter in a story he has been part of for over a decade.
“It’s been an honour to be a part of Hougang’s history,” he said. “The standard has been set by previous coaches—we must strive hard to meet it.”
Beyond Hougang’s clash with Young Lions, there’s plenty more Singapore Cup action to look forward to. Thai side BG Pathum face Balestier Khalsa on Sunday at Bishan Stadium, while Brunei DPMM take on Albirex Niigata (S) at Jurong East Stadium on Monday.
